Newly merged charity Iain Rennie Grove House Hospice Care (IRGH) has launched one of its top fundraising events of the year. The Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge is a walk through the beautiful Chilterns countryside along the Ridgeway and will take place on Sunday 18 September 2011. Supported by Arriva buses who will provide 10 buses and drivers for the day, the Challenge offers a choice of a 5 mile, 9 mile or an 18 mile route to suit both walkers (and dogs!) of all ages and fitness levels. IRGH is calling on local people to rise to the challenge and is promising a fun-filled day for all participants.
The walk will set off from Princes Risborough in Buckinghamshire. The full route is 18 miles long and last year the majority of walkers chose this route. There will also be a 5 mile option taking in the two peaks of Whiteleaf Cross and Coombe Hill and a 9 mile option which allows walkers to climb the third peak of Ivinghoe Beacon too. At the end of the 5 mile route, all participants can enjoy a barbecue in Wendover before the 5 mile entrants catch the specially provided Arriva bus back to their cars in Princes Risborough, while the 9 mile walkers take a bus to the third peak at Ivinghoe Beacon and the 18 mile participants continue on foot. All walkers will be returned to their cars in Princes Risborough using the dedicated Arriva bus service.
The choice of routes makes it ideal for families and this year there is a brand new Treasure Hunt for children to help them along the way. Adults signing up are being encouraged to aim to raise sponsorship of £150 which will fund an IRGH nurse for 24 hours. Community & Events Fundraising Manager, Ruth Barber said:
"Last year the walk raised a fantastic £100,000 and this year we are aiming to beat this total. We live in such a beautiful area and this is a great opportunity for people from all over the country to get out and enjoy the Chilterns whether they are seasoned walkers or not. We are very grateful to Arriva buses whose help is invaluable in organising the logistics of the day. At IRGH, we see every day how valuable our nursing service is to local people facing life limiting illnesses so this is a superb chance for everyone to enjoy themselves, see a beautiful part of the country, get some exercise and help a worthy cause at the same time."
This year’s fundraising target is £120,000 and the money will go towards the nursing care offered by the merged organisation to patients with life limiting illness either in the day hospice or at home. The service is offered free to families but Government funding only covers approximately 10% of the charity’s costs with fundraising needing to make up the remainder of the £6 million needed each year.
