BBC Breakfaster presenter Bill Turnbull is urging fellow dog-owners to sign up for Iain Rennie Hospice at Home’s (IRHH) Chilterns Three Peaks Challenge on Sunday 19th September to help local people with life-limiting illnesses across the Chilterns. The charity hopes that 2,000 walkers will take part this year and dog owners can bring their four-legged friends along for free. IRHH aims to beat last year’s achievement of raising £80,000 in one day: Every £150 raised pays for 24 hours of specialist nursing care.
Bill took part in last year’s walk with his wife and dogs but is unable to do so this year because of family commitments. He said:
"Last year’s event was a fantastic day and there was a great camaraderie amongst all the participants. In addition to the relaxed atmosphere, everyone enjoyed the beautiful scenery along the route knowing that each step was raising money for such a worthwhile local charity. I’m so disappointed not to be able to take part this year and recommend that people sign up quickly as I know places are going fast."
All walkers will complete the five-mile route from Princes Risborough to Wendover, taking in two peaks: Whiteleaf Cross and Coombe Hill. IRHH will be running a BBQ in Wendover so walkers and their dogs can recharge their batteries and rest their feet. For the first time this year, walkers can then complete the entire 18-mile route by continuing on to the third peak at Ivinghoe Beacon.
Entry costs £15 for adults and £7.50 for children - and dogs go free. The charge includes a t-shirt, transport on the day, a fundraising pack and a medal. Walkers will also receive a Jordans Frusili bar as the company is one of the event’s sponsors.
Helen Mariner at Iain Rennie Hospice at Home said: "We’re very grateful for Bill’s ongoing support of our work and we will miss him on September 19. It promises to be a great day out for the whole family, including dogs, to Walk the Chalk and raise money to help local people at the same time. If everyone can raise £150 in sponsorship we can collectively pay for a nursing team’s services for a year."
The Chilterns Three Peaks Challenge is IRHH’s largest annual fundraising event: the charity needs £4.8 million each year to help the 1,000 patients and their families it supports and only 9 per cent of its funding comes from the Government.
