High Wycombe lady to scale Chilterns 3 Peaks for the second time

Gill Blair from High Wycombe has announced her intention to scale the 3 Peaks of the Chilterns for the second time to raise money for vital 'at home' hospice nursing. Gill will be approaching her challenge with confidence after she completed the same route two years ago when she walked the very first Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge organised by Iain Rennie Hospice at Home (IRHH) with her sister, raising a massive £3,000 for the charity.

Last year, Gill took a break from the walking and helped out at the event by manning a marshall point along the route and encouraging other walkers on their way. This year, she will once again be pulling on her walking boots and setting her sights on the peaks of Whiteleaf Cross, Coombe Hill and Ivinghoe Beacon as she embarks on her 9 mile walk through the beautiful Chilterns countryside.

Gill's passionate support for IRHH (which recently merged with Grove House in St Albans to become Iain Rennie Grove House Hospice Care (IRGH)) is a result of the care and support they offered during her husband Bill's illness six years ago. Gill said:

"The Iain Rennie Hospice at Home was such a comfort during the 4 weeks we were granted from the onslaught of Bill's cancer. IRHH are able to care for terminally ill children and adults in their own homes, thereby negating the distressing and often scary necessity to go into hospital. For Bill, being able to die at home, in familiar surroundings, encircled by his beloved family and people whom he loved and who loved him dearly, made his burden so much easier to bear. To witness the calming care of the Iain Rennie nurses was a very uplifting experience and I have been supporting their endeavours ever since. We are enormously privileged in this area to have free access to a local Hospice at Home service. Although there are very many wonderfully caring hospices around the country, I believe it is the 'At Home' aspect that makes IRHH so particularly special."

Gill will be joined on this year's Chiltern's 3 Peaks Challenge by her two cousins Penny and Lucy who have both recently lost siblings to cancer. The cousins have chosen to walk the 9 mile route which allows them to scale all three peaks, taking a specially provided Arriva bus for part of the way. Other routes allow participants to climb the two peaks of Whiteleaf Cross and Coombe Hill and finish their challenge after walking 5 miles or alternatively to walk the whole way from Princes Risborough to Ivinghoe Beacon, scaling all three peaks, notching up a total of 18 miles.
