Denham lady rises to walking challenge

A mother-to-be from Broken Gate Lane in Denham will walk 18 miles along the famous Ridgeway trail, raising funds in a friend's memory.

Sandra Woodruff has signed up to take part in the Chilterns Three Peaks Challenge, an annual event organised by hospice charity Iain Rennie Grove House Hospice Care. The charity provides 24/7 call-out nursing care across the Chilterns for patients with life-limiting illness, giving them the choice to remain at home as long as possible.

Sandra says: "Despite living in the Chilterns, I've never walked any part of the Ridgeway before. I wanted to undertake something which would represent a personal challenge for me; not being particularly active or sporty I felt this would be ideal as there is no 'race' involved.

"I've never taken part in anything like this before, or any other sponsored event for that matter! I would have walked last year, but the 2010 challenge clashed with my son's birthday, so I've kept a close eye on the charity's website since, and wanted to commit to this year's walk by registering as soon as I could."

Sandra says: "I don't have huge aspirations; if I could manage to raise £500 I would be thrilled to think I have done my bit for a worthy cause.

"A good friend of mine spoke highly of the help and support she received from the charity whilst nursing her terminally ill mother, and she continued to donate after her mother's death. Tragically my friend was killed last year and I am walking in her memory, raising funds for a charity I know she found comfort and support in, during her time of need."
