Charity issues a call to arms for people to tread in the footsteps of ancient travellers and Viking armies

Newly merged charity Iain Rennie Grove House Hospice Care (IRGH) is issuing a call to arms for people throughout the area to follow in the footsteps of ancient travellers and Viking armies by taking part in the Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge. This annual charity walk which takes place on Sunday 18 September begins in Princes Risborough and follows the last 18 miles of the famous Ridgeway trail, often referred to as Britain’s oldest road.

In the past two years more than 2,000 people have risen to the Challenge and scaled the Chilterns 3 Peaks of Whiteleaf Cross, Coombe Hill and Ivinghoe Beacon, following the same route that people have used for travelling for more than 5,000 years. This year IRGH would like to recreate the ancient past and see armies of people walking along Britain’s oldest road to help preserve the right of local people facing life-limiting illnesses to choose where they are cared for.

IRGH’s Director of Nursing and Clinical Services Sue Varvel commented:

"At Iain Rennie Grove House Hospice Care we are passionate about giving people the right to choose where they are cared for when they receive a diagnosis of a life-limiting illness and we know from experience that most people like to be in their own homes surrounded by their families, friends and favourite things.

"Iain Rennie Hospice at Home has been helping local people to make this choice for 26 years now and our recent merger with Grove House has enhanced the services we provide by offering additional care and treatment in our day hospice, as well as bringing our 24/7 call out nursing service to even more people in Hertfordshire. We believe this is a service worth fighting for and with only 10% of our funding coming from the Government, we would like to see as many ‘soldiers’ as possible out on the Chilterns hills on 18 September walking to support our fundraising efforts."

Our modern day army will be able to choose from a 5 mile, 9 mile or the full 18 mile route with all walkers enjoying a rest at the 5 mile point in Wendover where a delicious barbecue will be ready and waiting. Arriva buses will then be joining in the troop manoeuvres by returning the 5 mile walkers to their cars in Princes Risborough and transporting the 9 mile walkers to Tring Station from where they will continue on foot to complete the Challenge. Brave 18 mile ‘soldiers’ will walk the whole route on foot!
